Reflecting on Water

I am house sitting for my pastors this week.

And as you might know, sometimes my most profound moments of God speaking is amidst the everyday things.

I was sipping my God-blessed coffee this morning, reflecting on a question my friend had asked me, "What is something that God has done for you that just left you thinking... WOW!?!!" My answer was filled with testimonies of God being the One who has been there for me when I felt alone, unloved, and hurt. That He filled the gap of pain from people who had fallen short of my expectations or who had deliberately hurt me. How He showed me to guard my heart, so that when relationships took a sour turn, I could genuinely love them and have grace for them.

As I was thinking these things, I looked over at my water bottle.

The bottle is clear, so I could see the water inside of it... but I could also see the reflection of the cap of my water bottle.

And then I started thinking about how much water I drink a day. I drink a LOT of water!!! (Bear with me here on this illustration.) Our bodies are designed to need water. A lot of it. In fact, there's a lot our bodies can go without. Hummus and pita chips, ice cream, tacos... even food in general! But we need water.

As I looked at the reflection inside of my water bottle, I remembered times spent on lakes and how I'd enjoyed looking at the reflection of the shore on the lake. How I have admired the reflection of mountains- like at Crater Lake, in Oregon. (Pictured above, with a subtle reflection. :) ) Amazing. Breathtaking. And gosh, it is the same stuff we drink every day!

I am reminded that I need water. I need to drink it, yes. But, even more than that, I need to be reflecting what (or in this case, WHO) is above me. Even though it is a simple illustration, I realize that we are called to be like water to others. To refresh one another. To bring life. And to reflect that which is Above (Jesus!!!)!

One more thing about water! We could probably agree that reflecting is part of its nature. It does not have to reflect only on Monday-Friday, from 9-5. It constantly and consistently reflects because that is a part of what water is. It also can't reflect without Light. The water isn't really what does the action of reflection. Truly, the water just needs to be still, and let the Light do its thing- and voila! Beauty is cast over the still waters.

So be still. Let your life be refreshing and life-giving. May God's character saturate you, and may the rays of His Light bounce off of your 'water' so that the world around you can get to know God. Remember all you need to do is be still, and let God do His thing!

Until Next Year,
