Brunch Blog
Hello Friends!
This post is dedicated to my friends in Springfield, Missouri!
On my health journey, I have arrived at an understanding that I cannot tolerate gluten. Boo! I was upset at first, because I love bread and had to be so mindful about what it is I could and could not eat!
However, I am learning that the gluten-free community is a lot larger than I once thought.
That being said, there are countless blogs, articles, and other resources for those trying to learn what is safe to eat. As someone with dietary restrictions, planning is the name of the game! Yet, as a busy college student with a mini fridge in her dorm, I find that I need to be informed about on the go options as well.
So, while Chic-Fil-A has a few favorites, such as the southwest salad and grilled nuggets, and Chipotle with their build your own burrito bowl, I found that breakfasts are one of the harder meals for me to find gluten free options for. If you've been reading the blog for any time, or if you follow me on social media, you know that I LOVE BRUNCH! Going to brunch with my mom or school friends is my favorite pastime!
I looked up Gluten Free Brunch spots here in Springfield, and though it's no small surprise, there seemed to be less options than there were back home in California.
This brunch queen is not about to give up!
I decided that if there was no blog post about it yet, that maybe this could be the first of many to represent the diverse options and needs for those who are looking to treat either themselves or a friend/family member who is looking for a gluten-free brunch!
A couple of places to try:
GAILEY'S BREAKFAST CAFE
If you're the kind of bruncher who loves options and old cafes with a European or early American feel, this will be your place. Gailey's is the most affordable of these recommendations, and has daily specials, a bar stool area where you can watch them flip pancakes, endless coffee, and a unique decor.
You'll start by walking in and getting to choose from three vastly different seating areas. Art on the walls are from local artists in one room, and are vintage from Springfield's own history in the next. As an ENFJ, I love being able to pick which room I feel like dining in!
What I love about Gailey's is that there are so many options that already don't contain gluten in them- so I don't feel like I am causing extra hassle. Sometimes I miss that sense of normalcy when I go out with friends, and Gailey's provides that! I also learned that they do, in fact, have gluten free bread! It comes with their "1/4 mile more" breakfast dish, which is an egg white omelet with veggies and gluten free bread! Woot! That sounds like a win to me!
THE AVIARY
This Springfield stop is a favorite of every girl/lady/woman I know. Guys like it too, but it is a cutesy brunch place. So dudes, if you are reading this, it's a great date spot to take your girlfriend, wife or daughter. They'll love it! While it is not necessarily the most filling brunch stop, it is novel and pretty unforgettable. The decorations "fly" off the walls (it is the Aviary, after all), and it is just unlike any other place in town. Well, with the exception of a place like Mrs. Gilmore's Tea Room.
I have several friends with very severe and specific allergies, and the Aviary is quick to customize a meal for them without fuss. If you are nervous or new to having to voice your allergies, this is one of the most accommodating spots you could land for your brunch (or even lunch or dinner) date. They are sure to take good care of you here!
FIRST WATCH
My friend Lainie recommended First Watch. She has been on the gluten-free scene for a lot longer than I have, and lives in Springfield! At first, I was apprehensive... I didn't want to just be limited in ordering an omelet again, but she reassured me that they can make their items gluten free, such as their avocado toast on gluten-free bread! This used to be one of my favorite brunch places, so I now that I know I can do eat there, I am so excited and can't wait to go back!
Plus, the atmosphere in the Springfield location is just the cutest- very farmhouse-y/Joanna-Gaines-esque!
I know this is only a mere 3 places to choose from, but I hope this helps someone else. I would love to work on a more extensive list, and if you have recommendations, do let me know!
Happy Brunching,
Mel xoxo
