Summer Camp 2014 Notes
{Notes taken during sermon by Assemblies of God Missionary Adam Shipp; missionary to Somali people}
-Sin doesn't send you to hell; saying that you are going to run your life your way...It is us choosing ourselves to be lord instead of Jesus Christ. This is a Lordship issue.
-prodigal son, Luke 15:11-32. Somalis think a lot like muslims. Regarding the pigs, the second son was at the lowest of low. Somalis don't eat pigs or eat with people who do. It is serious. And he was longing for THEIR food, sleeping with the piggies. So, in a cultural context, he was very desperate.
-also, the second son asking for his share of the inheritance from his father was like him saying to his dad, "I wish you were dead, I just want my inheritance, I'm leaving you but I want your money." Pretty insulting. Yet the father awaits him with open arms.
-giving our lives to Jesus is reasonable.
-there is more evidence that Jesus lived, died, and lived again than George Washington crossing the Delaware
-DANGER: we try to take control of our own lives.
-SAVIOR: we can have full sonship. 100% back into restoration! 🙌
-God restored Adam Shipp. God has restored me.
---------------------------
Lessons Learned:
1) Who is the Lord in your life? In lay man's terms, who's in charge of your life? Do you feel entitled to be in charge and in control? As Christians, we are to allow Jesus Christ to be the one in charge. We surrender this "right" we feel we have of being in charge and calling the shots.
2) I have been like a prodigal son. Sometimes, I just want the blessings of God. Sometimes, I (theoretically) tell God, I don't care about the authority you have in my life, I just want your salvation, peace, joy, and goodness and want to go my own way and have my own whirl at this world. No. I think that's insulting to God. Like Job said, shall I accept only good from God? Yes, God gives us good, good gifts. But as a Christian, I have seen complacency and irreverence lead to symptoms of the prodigal son. Luckily for us, the Father always awaits us with open arms, ready to receive us back. We can stay in his arms as long as we choose.
3) We can be restored from whatever brokenness we have. One-hundred percent. Through Jesus Christ and with the help of the Holy Spirit.
